Determined hockey finds its reward with promotion.

Thirsk could only muster 10 players to play in the league B, following their promotion from league C in November. Thirsk were grateful over the morning to borrow players from Harrogate and Bradford. First up were Harrogate, and Thirsk took a little while to find their stride, with several players being forced to take on new positions. The regular defence of Alex Docherty, Paddy Medley and James Houseman dealt with the Harrogate attackers well. Thirsk created well down the right, but chances went wide. The deadlock was broken from the individual skills of Harry Goodall, who danced his way into the circle, and reverse hit his shot into the bottom corner. A great 1-0 win to start.
Next up were Bradford, and this was a tougher game, and Sam Bosomworth, Josh Dale, and Oliver Houseman, along with Harry had their work cut out in midfield. Time and again they were able to turn over Bradford possession, and Thirsk’s improving passing game became more imposing. A penalty corner chance was saved. Thirsk also defended a penalty corner themselves, and Luke Brownlee was called upon for two good saves. The game was settled by another fine run from Harry, who broke into the circle, beating several defenders, before unleashing a ferocious tomahawk which flew passed the goalie’s helmet. Another fine 1-0 win.
The final game with unbeaten Driffield was another step up in terms of quality, with both sides using possession well. Thirsk were passing as well as they have all season, and James Foster stretched the defence on several occasions. Thirsk took an early lead, and it was Harry again, who was allowed too much space, following quick passing from Oliver and Sam , and his third tomahawk of the day found the bottom corner. Driffield though soon replied, although Luke made a fine first save, he could not get to the follow up. The game continued to be quite open, but Thirsk impressed with their passing once more, and Harry Tribe, took on one of Josh’s fine passes, and fed through to James Foster, who looked a little unlucky not to get more, when trying to round the goal keeper. Final score 1-1.
Many congratulations to the whole team, who showed that team hockey when executed well can be very effective. Everyone did their job well, and the passing and possession was pleasing for all to see, combined with great determination and fine tackling all over the pitch. Thirsk deservedly get up to the A league for the next session in January.
