U10 Boys really get their act together.

A cool afternoon in Leeds, did not upset their enthusiasm or abilities.
Thirsk U10 boys had a great afternoon in difficult weather conditions in the B division of the YYHL. We travelled with a squad of 10 and for the first time ever managed to field a team with no fewer than four Olivers in outfield positions - the ultimate coaching nightmare!
Thirsk's first game was York and it was the first match of the day. As is often the way with children’s sport their first match was a bit of a wake up to the afternoon and both teams played below their best with the Thirsk boys struggling at time to hold their shape and move the ball around the pitch. The game ended 1-0 to York.
The team spoke about what had gone well and not so well and how the boys wanted to play in the next three games. Next up were a very capable Leeds squad and the contrast in how Thirsk played in that game to the first match was stark. Great work in defence from Sam and Oliver S with Max and Thomas coming on as subs in defence and putting in some great tackles and keeping up our tight marking. Our midfield of Alistair, Oliver McI and George worked well with lots of early ball being played wide into space and Oliver McN having a man of the match performance as our ever elusive un-markable forward. The game finished 2-1 to Thirsk with Jack making a number of important saves and keeping the defence organised from goal.
Thirsk took to the pitch against Harrogate with a new midfield formation of Alistair, Oliver McI and Sam with George and Oliver S having a great game in defence. The team played some great hockey passing the ball with confidence and accuracy that put Harrogate on the back food from the first minutes. Great goals from Oliver McI and Alister (both getting their first goals in competition) with Sam peppering the Harrogate D with strong passes. Oliver McN continued to do great work up front and was very unlucky not to get two goals of his own. Max, Oliver Q and Thomas make great contributions to the team performance too.
The last match of the day was against Lindum - the strongest team in the division, but this didn’t put the Thirsk boys off. The game was a very close contest with Thirsk defence and Jack in goal having to play their best to deal with a strong Lindum attack. The Thirsk boys played their best hockey of the day and did particularly well on the counter attack but were just not able to find the goal. Lindum scores with a VERY well worked penalty corner routine and in the end the game finished 1-0 but it could have gone either way. The boys left the pitch literally steaming having played their socks off. Well done all.
